تُوفِّيَ بالقاهرةِ عامَ ١٩٦٢م.

مثَّلَ «أبو حامد الغزالي» حالةَ التناحُرِ الفكريِّ والفلسفيِّ التي عاشَها العصرُ العباسي؛ عصرُ ازدهارِ الترجمةِ والنَّقل، عصرُ المُتكلِّمينَ والفلاسفة؛ فقد نَهَلَ «الغزالي» من كلِّ العلومِ والمعارِف، وسارَ في دروبِ المَدارسِ الفَلسفية، حتى وصَلَ إلى مرحلةِ الشكِّ في كلِّ شيء، ووجَدَ أن منابعَ الدينِ والشرائعِ الأُولى في خطرٍ بعدَ أن أحاطَ بها جمودُ الفِكر؛ فشرَعَ في تحريرِ النفسِ والقلبِ من قيودِ العصر، عن طريقِ إرجاعِ العامَّةِ لأصولِ الدينِ ومَشاربِهِ الروحيةِ والعَقَديةِ الأُولى. والكاتبُ هنا يَرصدُ ظروفَ نشأةِ «الغزالي»، ونظرتَه في الرُّوحِ والنفسِ التي سبَقَ بها جهابذةَ الغرب، واتخاذَه الشكَّ منهجًا واعتقادَه فيه، والقولَ بباطنيةِ المَعرِفة؛ ومِن ثَمَّ ارتباطُه بالتصوُّف، والتنظيرُ له، إلى أن أصبحَ حُجةً للإسلام، ومجدِّدًا له في القرنِ الخامسِ الهِجري.
