كان كمال يجلس في تلك الزاوية المظلمة الرطبة، يستنشق فيها روائح تقتل في الانسان كل شيء جميل، كان الجو بارداً جداً وكانت ملابسه متسخة وممزقة عليها أثار دماء، لم يغسلها إلا ذلك الماء البارد الذي كانوا كل يوم يرمونه به.
كانت عتمة السجن وبشاعة الرائحة وفظاعة الأصوات تنطفئ كلها في اللحظة التي يدخل فيها حالة الأحلام التي تأخذه من مكانه إلى أماكن أخرى تشتهيها نفسه، في الحقيقة أنه لولا تلك الأحلام لم يبقى حيّاً كل هذا الوقت.. خمس سنوات لم ير فيها الشمس ولم ير حتى وجه سجانه …ولكنه كان يعرف أصواتهم جيداً ليس فقط أصواتهم وإنما كل صوت في السجن حتى وقع أقدامهم، فهو خلال تلك السنوات لم يقم بشيء سوى أن يستمع إلى تلك الأصوات أو أن يحلم بنفسه خارج كل ذلك الواقع.
أما الاستماع فكانوا يربطون عينيه كلما أرادوا التحقيق معه ويستمرون بضربه وهم يطرحون الأسئلة والتي خلال السنوات الخمس لم يعرف إجابتها قط رغم محاولاته العديدة أن يختار الجواب الصحيح ولكنه دائماً ما كان يخطئ
