رباعيات الخيام عمل شعري فذ تجتمع فيه روح الشاعرية بروح الحكمة وروح الانفلات، كما تجتمع فيه حياة العاصي بحياة التائب، وروح الالتزام بروح التحرر. لكن الشاعر في النهاية يميل إلى ما يجب الميل إليه وهو جادة الطريق وحسن الظن بالله، وتعنيف النفس أمام شهواتها، فرحمة الله العظيمة التي وسعت كل شيء هي الملاذ الأخير الذي يلجأ إليه المؤمن والعاصي معا.
وعلى هذا كانت خاتمة حياة عمر الخيام بكل تناقضاتها، فقد حكي أن عمر الخيام كان يتأمل "الإلهيات" من كتاب الشفاء لابن سينا، فلما وصل إلى فصل الواحد والكثير وضع الكتاب وقام فصلى ثم أوصى ولم يأكل ولم يشرب، فلما فرغ من صلاة العشاء سجد لله وقال في سجوده "اللهم إني عرفتك على مبلغ إمكاني فاغفر لي فإن معرفتي إياك وسيلتي إليك" ثم أسلم نفسه الأخير.
القيمة الفنية لرباعيات الخيام ترتكن إلى الرؤية الشمولية للفعل الإنساني، والحفر في الطبقات العميقة من الذات الإنسانية خاصة المتدنية، والقدرة التعبيرية النافذة المؤثرة، لنصبح أمام نص شعري لا وعظي له قيمته في تاريخ الإبداع الإنساني.
