علماء النفس يُشيرون إلى وجود مظهرين رئيسيين في علم النفس يحددان دراسة النمو، والمظهر الأول يكمُن في دراسة النمو العضوي، ويتضمن دراسة النمو الجسدي من حيث صفات الجسد، والفسيولوجي من حيث النمو لأجهزة الجسد المُختلفة، أما المظهر الثاني فهو الذي يهتم بدراسة النمو الوظيفي، ويشمل نمو الوظائف الانفعالية والنفسية.. أما عن مراحل النمو فهناك المرحلة الجينية وهي مرحلة الحمل أو التأسيس، أي الأساس الحيوي لنمو الكائِن البشري، بدءاً من لحظة الإخصاب حتى لحظة الوضع، وهذه المرحلة تُمثل الأشهر التسعة المكوّنة للإنسان. ومرحلة الوضع بعد فترة الحمل التي دامت تسعة أشهر تأتي لحظة الوضع وهو خروج الجنين من العالم الداخلي الذي تكوّن فيه إلى العالم الخارجي، ليُتابع نموه في هذا العالم في عدد من المراحل المُتتالية.
