تعرّضت قصة الطبيب هاري هوارد هولمز الذي عرف اختصارًا باسم الدكتور إتش إتش هولمز (H.H. Holmes) إلى الكثير من الأقاويل والإشاعات خلال سنوات طويلة حتى بات التفريق بين الحقيقة والخيال أمرًا مستحيلًا، نص اعترافه للشرطة وأقواله للصّحافة اشتملت على قتله لسبعة وعشرين (27) شخصًا، لكن بعض من ادعى قتلهم كانوا على قيد الحياة! بينما اختفى الكثير من الأشخاص من معارفه دون أن يعترف بقتلهم، كان مختلًا بكل تأكيد خصوصًا بعد اعتقاله فقد بات يعتقد أنه مسكون وأن ملامح وجهه تتغير إلى ملامح شيطانية.
عُرف بأنه أول قاتل متسلسل في تاريخ الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية (USA) وقيل عنه أنه تجسيد للشر نفسه، وسُمي المبنى الشهير الذي بناه باسم فندق القتل وقلعة القتل، كان يقتل بدافع الطمع والجشع وامتلك رغبة لا يمكن اشباعها للنصب والاحتيال بالإضافة لضميرٍ ميتٍ تمامًا وهوسٍ بالجثث الآدمية.
كان من الشخصيات الجذّابة في المجتمع كالمشاهير، فقد كان وسيمًا ومرحًا وشديد الذكاء وقاتلًا بالجملة، وكانت قصته هدفًا للكثير من المبالغات والإضافات والشائعات حتى تحولت تلك الشخصية إلى تجسيد لمعنى الوحش الحقيقي، كان بمثابة الشيطان في تلك الفترة بسبب ارتكابه لجرائم مروعة، فقد كانت الأماكن التي سكنها هي المسرح لجرائم القتل الوحشي التي يصعب الحديث عنها بسبب دمويتها وسُمي بوحش المدينة البيضاء.
