هذا كتاب ينطق بالذكريات، روى فيه كاتبه وممليه أحمد بن عبدالرحمن العرفج قصة حياته، من بداياته في مسقط رجليه ولا أقول رأسه، فما شهدنا مولده ولا هو وعاه، لكنه حدثنا عنه ورواه على طريقة طه حسين في الأيام، ناولني مسودة الكتاب وطلب أن أكتب مقدمة له وهذا من حسن ظنه بأخيه وإلا فلا عطر بعد عروس كما تقول العرب. أحمد لا يحتاج إلى تقديم فقد سبقته سمعته في الأوساط وشهرته في الآفاق، تصفحت الكتاب وتأملته ثم حملته معي في سفري من الساحل إلى الداخل لعل الله يفتح علي بشيء أقوله، فرغت له ساعات في الضحى ماذا عسى أن أقول وكاتبه شخص غير مجهول، ولما خشيت أن أفسد على القارئ متعته قلت أجعلها جزءاً من ذكرياتي معه (فلا يهان الضيف ولا تفنى الغنم).
