كنت طالبًا كأغلب الطلاب، لم أكن خارقًا للعادة، ولم تحدث لي أو بمرأى مني أحداثًا فوق اعتيادية، كل ما في الأمر أني قررت كتابة شيء من ذكرياتي لأحتفظ لنفسي بصورة من الماضي قبل أن تفلت من ذاكرتي، وهي عادة سيئة لدى الإنسان وحده، يحتفظ ببعض ماضيه في أوراقه أو في دماغه، كأن شقاء الحاضر لا يكفيه حتى يحتفظ ببعض شقاء الماضي حيًا في حاضره.
هذا هو السبب الحقيقي لكتابتي هذه الأوراق، فأما الأسباب التي نقابلها في مقدمات بعض كتب الذكريات والسير الذاتية.. فلا أدّعيها كذبًا، ذاك لأني لم أكتب ما كتبت لأهدي للقراء خبرة تنفعهم في حياتهم، لا لأنه لا يمكن لذكريات عادية أن تحقق هذا الهدف، بل لأني كتبت هذه الذكريات لنفسي متخففًا من عبء الكتابة لجمهور من القراء، ولم يخطر على بالي وأنا أكتب أن أنشرها في يوم من الأيام.
