الخط من الصناعات المدنية التي تقوى وتضعف بقوة الحضارة وضعفها ، والعرب ونخص بالذكر منهم أهل الحجاز كانوا قبل الاسلام أمة بدوية لا تقتضي معيشتهم انتشار الكتابة والقراءة ، وليس في آثارهم بالحجاز ما يدل على انهم كانوا يعرفون الكتابة والقراءة الا قبيل الاسلام، مع أنهم كانوا محاطين شمالًا وجنوبًا بأمم ممدنة من العرب خلفوا نقوشًا كتابية كثيرة، وأشهر تلك الأمم الأنباط في الشمال كتبوا بالحرف النبطي، وحمير في اليمن كتبوا بالحرف المسند، فلم يوجد فيهم من يقرأ ويكتب إلا بعد أن رحل بعضهم إلى بلاد الشام أو العراق ، وتخلق بأخلاق الحضر فاقتبس منهم الكتابة ، وعاد وهو يكتب العربية بالخط النبطي أو السرياني اللذين تولد منهما الخط العربي.
