لاشك أن تطوّر الفنون القديمة في الشرق الأدني تم علي يد الإيرانيين , فكان لهم بعد ذلك القسط الأجزل والقدح المعلّى في الفنون الإسلامية , والواقع أن الترك نقلوا عنهم معظم أساليبهم الفنية , بينما العرب أنفسهم لم تكن لهم تقاليد فنية عريقة , وقد عقد ابن خلدون في مقدّمته فصلا " في أن المباني والمصانع في الملة الإسلامية قليلة بالنسبة إلي قدرتها وإلى من كان قبلها من الدول " , وذكر فيه أن السبب في ذلك بداوة العرب وبعدهم عن الصنائع , وأن الدين كان أوّل الأمر مانعا من المغالاة في البنيان والإسراف فيه في غير القصد " فلما بعد العهد بالدين والتحرّج في أمثال هذه المقاصد وغلبت طبيعة الملك والترف واستخدم العرب أمة الفرس وأخذوا عنهم الصنائع والمباني ودعتهم إليها أحوال الدعة والترف فحينئذ شيدوا المباني والمصانع " .
