جورج ألكسندر ويلكن: مستشرقٌ هولندي؛ وُلِدَ عام ١٨٤٧م في مينادوا بسيليبس، وهي جزيرةٌ إندونيسيةٌ تقع بين بورنيو وغينيا الجديدة. تخصَّصتْ أعمالُهُ في دراسةِ الموضوعاتِ التي تتعلَّقُ بالزواجِ والعلاقاتِ الأُسَريةِ والميراثِ لشعوبِ الملايو. ومنْ مؤلَّفاتِهِ الأكثرِ شهرةً «الأمومةُ عندَ العرب»، الذي تُرجِمَ إلى عدةِ لغاتٍ منْ بينِها العربية. وقدْ تُوفِّي عام ١٨٩١م في ليدن الواقعةِ في جنوبِ هولندا.

يُعدُّ موضوعُ «الأمومةِ» والنظامِ الأموميِّ منَ الموضوعاتِ التي لاقَتِ اهتمامًا كبيرًا من قِبَلِ المستشرقِ الهولنديِّ «ويلكن»، شأنُه في ذلكَ شأنُ كثيرٍ منَ المستشرقِينَ في القرنِ التاسعِ عشَر، حيثُ سادَ اعتقادٌ بأنَّ الأمَّ كانتْ هيَ محورَ العائلةِ عندَ الشعوبِ القديمة. ورأى ويلكن أنَّ الأمومةَ أقدمُ عهدًا منَ الأبوَّة، وأنها كانَتْ أمرًا شائعًا في المجتمعاتِ البدائية؛ ومنْ هنا يبرزُ الهدفُ الذي دفَعَه لتأليفِ هذا الكتاب، وهوَ الرغبةُ في بحثِ هل كانتِ الأمومةُ شائعةً عندَ العربِ القدماءِ مثلما كانَتْ عندَ الشعوبِ الأخرى، وهوَ ما أكَّدَهُ منْ خلالِ هذهِ الدراسةِ التي تناولَتْ أنماطَ الزواجِ في العصرِ الجاهلي، وأوضحَتْ أن النظامَ الأموميَّ كانَ معمولًا بهِ في بعضِ مجتمعاتِ العربِ في جاهليتِهِم؛ حيثُ تعدَّدَ أزواجُ المرأةِ الواحدة، وانتسَبَ الأبناءُ إلى الأمِّ وليسَ إلى الأب.
