يعد القرنان السادس والسابع الميلادي مرحلة إنتقالية وبرزخية في تاريخ القرابة في المجتمع العربي، فقد شهد العصر قُبيل الإسلام إتجاهين في العلاقات الجنسية الأول أمومي وهذا ما يطلق عليه زواج الصديقة كما ورد في النصوص والمصنفات التراثية والآخر أبوي ويوصف أحياناً بزواج البعل أو بزواج الملكية، وكان هذان الأنموذجان متعارضين ومتصارعين إبان ظهور النبوة، وذلك لطبيعة الفروقات والتمايزات التي أثرت على تركيبة المجتمع من حيث قوانين القرابة وحرية المرأة الجنسية ومكانتها والإطار الجغرافي للزواج. فزواج الصديقة وهو مشتق من كلمة صديق تعد نمطاً من القرآن ينتسب فيه الأطفال إلى قبيلة أمهم ويتم هذا النوع بموجب إتفاق متبادل بين امرأة ورجل يقيم الزواج في عشيرة زوجه التي تحتفظ بحقها بالإنفصال عنه متى شاءت. أما في زواج البعل فإن الأطفال ينتسبون إلى الزوج الذي يتمتع بوضعية الأب للأطفال والبعل بالنسبة لزوجه فهو السيد والمبادر في هذا النمط من الإقتران. ويكاد كتاب الأمومة عند العرب دراسة في أنماط الأنوثة والنكاح يعالج هذه الإشكالية بمنهج علمي رصين.
