في يومٍ صافٍ من أيام الربيع في باريس من عام ١٦٨٨، احتشَدَ جمهورٌ من الشخصيات البارزة والمثقفين في قاعة المحكمة ليشهدوا مُحاكَمةَ «جان باتيست دوني»؛ الطبيب اللامع، الذي حَجز لنفسه مؤخرًا مكانًا في التاريخ كأول شخصٍ يُجرِي تجرِبةَ نقلِ دمٍ إلى إنسان. لم تَسِرِ الأمور على النحو الذي أراده الطبيب أو مريضُه؛ فقد مات المريض بعد فترةٍ قصيرة، ومَثُل الطبيب للمُحاكَمة بتُهمة القتل. هل كان له الحقُّ في إجراء تلك التجرِبة؟ وهل قصَّرَ في واجبه؟ ما مدى مسئوليته عن الوفاة؟ وهل تُنصِفه العدالةُ أم تقتصُّ منه؟
