يمكننا أن نعرف العصبية كالتالي:
العصبية: ( )
(بمعناها اللغوي تعني سرعة الانفعال " ، ويمكن تعريفها نفسيًا أنها " سلوك يتصف بطابع التوتر، نتيجة الشعور بالمعاملة السيئة، أو الإهانة. وهي مظهر طبيعي من مظاهر سلوك الفرد ، تبدأ ملامحها بالظهور منذ النصف الأول من السنة الأولى، وهي دليل على النمو الفسيولوجي الصحيح.
.. ولا تختلف العصبية عند الطفل عن العصبية عند الراشدين ، فعندما يبدو الطفل مضطربًا، كثير الحركة، عدوانيًا فثمّة ما يشير إلى أن الطفل يرفض شيئًا ما، أدى إلى ظهور سلوك العصبية.
ومن خلال ذلك يمكننا تعريف الطفل العصبي بأنه :
الطفل الذي يعاني من نوبات عصبية، يفقد فيها سيطرته على نفسه، وعلى أفعاله؛ مما يجعله يقوم ببعض الأفعال، لا يدري مداها وخطورتها عليه، وعلى من حوله.
وهذه مشكلة تواجه العديد من الآباء والأمهات .. وحالات عصبية الطفل لا تعود إلى أسباب نفسية فقط، بل أن هناك عوامل جسمية، تؤثر في عدم استقرار الطفل وعصبيته، ومهمة الوالدين هي محاولة فهم الأسباب الكامنة خلف هذه الأعراض العصبية، ومساعدة الطفل على التخلص منها بطريقة غير قهرية.
