على الرغم من التطور المستمر الذي تشهده العلوم الطبية في مجال مرض السكري، ما زلنا نشهد تطوراً لاختلاطات المرض الناجمة عن الإهمال، ونقص في التثقيف الصحي، وانتشار المفاهيم الخاطئة حول هذا المرض.
أولى توصيات منظمة الصحة العالمية حول هذا المرض هي: "يجب أن تدرج رعاية مرضى السكري في برنامج الرعاية الصحية على مستوى المجتمع، مع إضافة إمكانيات مناسبة على مستويات الرعاية".
