جاء في مقدّمة هذا الكتاب لمؤلفه سلامة موسى :
"هذه الفصول التالية هي «محاولات» لا أكثر ولا أقل، وكما هو الشأن في كل محاولة قد يكون النجاح أو الخيبة نصيبها، فقد تناولت موضوعات كثيرة كانت معالجتها المألوفة الماضية إما أدبية وإما وعظية، فعالجتها من الناحية السيكلوجية ،وتحدّثت عن الموسيقا والأدب والعائلة والإجرام والمجتمع واللغة، وحاولت أن أتعمق الأصول التي تصوغ أو توجّه أو تحرف هذه الأشياء وأمثالها، ونحن في مصر، بل في جميع الأقطار العربية، في مجتمع شاذ، وهو مثل الرجل الشاذ، يرتطم بعقبات قد اخترعها بخياله، فهو يخشى المستقبل ويتوهّم الأخطار ويفرَّ إلى الماضي، ويستند إلى ما يسميه تقاليد، ويخاف ويتردد ثم هو في تركيبه شاذ؛ إذ هو يفصل بني الجنسين كأنَّ الدنيا للرجال فقط وليست للنساء،وهذا الفصل وحده شذوذ خطري يحتاج إلى العلاج، وعندنا آلاف من الرجال والنساء، شبابًا وكهولا قد حطمهم هذا الانفصال وأزاغ بصريتهم في الدنيا، ففسدوا في سلوكهم، وارتدوا إلى مساوئ وانحرافات يتعرضون بها من هذا الانفصال على غير جدوى، بل أحيانًا في
ضرر أو خطر بالغ.
وهو — أي المجتمع — إلى جانب الكظوم والانحرافات الجنسية التي أوجدها بالفصل بين الجنسين قد أحدث أيضاً كظوماً اقتصاديّة أخرى خطرية، كثيراً ما تنتهي إلى حركات إجرامية تبدو في الظاهر كأنها دعوة إلى الانتهاض، وولكنها في الواقع انتهاض زائف أقرب الأشياء إلى النشاط الهستيري والحركة التشنجية.
