«كليلة ودمنة» كتاب في الأدب، والشائع أن مؤلِّفه هو الحكيم الهندي «بيدبا»، كتبه ناصحًا به الملك «دبشليم»، حقّق الكتاب شهرةً في الشّرق والغرب، وتوالت طبعاته في مصر منذ عهد محمد علي باشا إلى اليوم، واتّخذته وزارة المعارف كتابًا مدرسيًّا. نال من إقبال الناس وعنايتهم ما لم ينلْه كتاب آخر، فقد تنافست الأمم في ترجمته إلى لغاتها، وحرصت على نقله إليها.
يحوي الكتاب حِكمًا وآدابًا وضروبًا في السّياسة وفنونًا من القَصّ وأخبار وأحاديث من الحياة الاجتماعيّة، مما يجعله دُرَّة التراث العالميِّ، وواحد من أفضل كتب الأدب، فهو نتاج تفاعل الحضارة الهنديّة والفارسيّة والحضارة العربيّة أيضًا.
انتقل كتاب «كليلة ودمنة» إلى الأدب الفارسيِّ بترجمةٍ قام بها «برزويه» إلى «الّلغة الفهلوية»، كما أضاف إلى الكتاب من وحيه الفكري، ثمّ وصل إلى الأدب العربيِّ حينما قام «عبد الله بن المقفّع» بترجمته، وقد بذل جهدًا بالإضافة إليه إلى جانب الترجمة، ممّا أثراه بالأدب العربي، فكان الكتاب موضع بحثٍ ومادةً للاستقصاء.
