اعتقد الفيلسوف والمؤرّخ العلامة الدكتور غوستاف لوبون أنه يَصعب أن يُكتب تاريخ الثورة الفرنسيّة أو في روح الثورات من غير أن يُنظر إلى ما اشتمل عليه من آراء ومبادئَ وتحليلات لم يسبقه إليها أحد.
من رأي لوبون أن الثمرة التي اقتطفت بعد القيام بكثيرٍ من التخريب في أثناء الثورة الفرنسية لا بد َمن نيلها في نهاية الأمر مع سير الحضارة بلا كبير عناء، أي إن لوبون يقول بمبدأ التطوّر التدريجي للفوز بما قد لا يؤدّي إليه العنف، وإن ما تنتهي إليه الثورات من النتائج يكون قد نضج نضجًا لا شعوريًا فيما سبقها، فتكون الثورات بلا عنف وجور.
بناءً على ذلك يطلق لوبون اسم الثورات على الانقلابات السياسية والدينية والعلمية، كما يحدد شأن الحكومات والأمة في الثورات، وهو لا يغفل عن تقديم بيان كاشف عما يسود الثورات من خوف وحرصٍ وحسد وزهو وحماسة، كما يبحث في روح الجماعات والمجالس الثوريّة.
