"هذه دمشق جنة الله في أرضه، تتخايل بمروجها الخضراء، ورياضها الزهر، وبنسيمها الذي اعتل فصحت به الأجسام، ورق فهفت له الأرواح، ومر وئيد الخطى فتشبثت بذيله الأزهار، وهذه جداولها التي تجري في خرير عذب يناغم تغريد الطيور، تفترق وتلتقي فتصور الحياة بين يأس ورجاء، وفرقة ولقاء، ثم لا تفتأ تتعثر بين الخمائل، وتنحدر بين الغياض، حتى تلتقي بنهر بردى فيلتقمها زخاره الخضم، ويدور بها كالمذعور الحائر يلج كل دار، ويخرج من كل حائط. هذه دمشق بقبابها العالية، وقصورها الشامخة، ومآذنها التي امتدت إلى السماء، في أيام خليفتها العظيم الوليد بن عبد الملك عظمة وسلطان وملْك عريض، وقوة أخضعت الفرس، وجثت أمامها بيزنطة خاشعة".
كما كانت دمشقُ حاضرةً في بال الكاتب علي الجارم، فإنّ الأنثى حاضرةٌ كذلك في هذه القصة، المرأة المقاتلة الشّجاعة، وهي «عائشة المخزوميَّة» الصورة المميّزة للنضال في التاريخ الإسلامي، أدهشت العقول،واستحقّت التّقدير، إلاّ أن هذه المقاتلةُ مُحبّةٌ لفارس يدعى مُغيث»، لكنها لم تعطه فرصةً كي يثنِها عن تحقيق مطلبها.
