يلخص الكاتب في هذا الكتاب ما سبقه فيه أبرز علماء النفس، مثل سيغموند فرويد وأدلر ، وكارل يونج ورفرز. وراعى به تبسيط المصطلحات العلمية، فكتب بأسلوب سهل ويسير، فكان من السهل على القارئ فهم الأفكار والنّظريات المعقدة بسهولة.
ويتعمق هذا الكتاب بالبحث بالعقل الباطن أو ما يسمى اللاوعي، والدّور المركزي له في توجيه النّفس البّشرية، ويظهر للقارئ من خلال قراءة هذا الكتاب كيف يتجلى ظهر بعض الظواهر المرتبطة بالعقل الباطن من خلال الأوهام والخواطر والأحلام التي تنتاب النفس البشرية. ويساعد هذا الكتاب أيضًا القارئ على التّعامل نفسيًّا مع الهموم والأمراض النّاتجة عن كبته المستمر للأشياء في اللاوعي وتراكمها.
ويقول سلامة موسى في استهلاله لهذا الكتاب:
«موضوع هذا الكتاب جديد في اللغة العربية . وهو في اللغات الأوربية حديث العهد يقوم بزعامته فرويد العالم النمسوي يعاضده ويروج نظرياته وينقحها طائفة من العلماء مثل يونج في سويسرا وأدلر في ألمانيا وبودوان في فرنسا ورفرز في انجلترا . وربما كان هذا الأخير أكبر من نقح في نظريات فرويد . ولكن فضل الاختراع والابتكار لفرويد وحده . وقد كان في ميسوري أن أنقل كتابًا من مؤلفات هؤلاء إلى العربية وأقنع بذلك ولكني وجدت أن لهجة التأليف تساعد القارئ على الفهم أكثر من لهجة الترجمة . وأنا مع ذلك في تأليفي إنما ألخص ما درسته عن هؤلاء وفي التلخيص تنقية وتنقية أراعي فيهما مصلحة القارئ العربي التي قد لا يساعدني النقل في بلوغها »
