ولد جوزيف ميرفي في العشرين من مايو لعام 1898 في مدينة صغيرة بضواحي مقاطعة كورك بأيرلندا ،وتم إلحاقه بالمدارس الحكومية التي شهدت تفوقه وذكاءه ونظرا للتشجيع الذي تلقاه ورغبته في الدراسة الدينية فقد تم قبوله كطالب في معهد الدراسات الدينية.
لكن بوصوله إلى سن العشرين ترك الدراسة بالمعهد حيث وجد أن هدفه كان اكتشاف أفكار جديدة واكتساب خبرات جديدة وهو الهدف الذي لم يكن بإمكانهتحقيقه (English: Joseph Murphy)

لكن بوصوله إلى سن العشرين ترك الدراسة بالمعهد حيث وجد أن هدفه كان اكتشاف أفكار جديدة واكتساب خبرات جديدة وهو الهدف الذي لم يكن بإمكانهتحقيقه في إيرلندا الخاضعة للنفوذ الديني الصارم مما دفعه إلى ترك عائلته والرحيل إلى أمريكا.
وصل ميرفي إلى مركز تجميع المهاجرين في جزيرة إيليس ولم يكن بحوزته سوى خمسة دولارات وكان هدفه الأول أن يعثر على مكان ليعيش فيه وقاده حظه الحسن إلى العثور على نزل تقاسم إحدى غرفه مع صيدلي يعمل بالصيدلة المحلية.
كتب أكثر من ثلاثين كتابا وتوفي في ديسمبر 1981 وقد تولت زوجته الدكتورة جين ميرفي مسئولية المؤسسة التي كان يديرها حتى وفاتها.
