تتناول محرقة اليهود التي قام بها النازيون الألمان وراح ضحيتها الآلاف من اليهود.. يتناولها الكاتب من منظور عقدة الذنب والخزي تجاه تلك الجرائم المتهم فيها الجيل الذي عاصر تلك الجرائم، وكان مشاركا فيها، سواء بالمشاركة الفعلية أو بقبولها أو بتجاهلها والسكوت عنها..تركز الرواية على فكرتين رئيسيتين الأولى هي فكرة العنف الوحشي الذي عامل به النازيون اليهود، وكيف أنهم أحرقوهم في أفران الغاز وأدخلوهم في معسكرات اعتقال بالمئات، وكان ذلك سنوات قبل 1945 وقت الحرب العالمية الثانية، حيث يتبنى البطل وجهة نظر الجيل الثاني الذي رفض تلك الوحشية بعد أن كبر ووصل إلى مرحلة الشباب، وأتطلع على التاريخ، كان ذلك في منتصف الستينات مع حركة الطلاب الثورية في ألمانيا، والتي أعلنت رفضها لممارسات النازيين وأدانت الجيل السابق، جيل الآباء الذي وافق على تلك الوحشية، ومنهم من شارك فيها فعليا بقتل اليهود وتعذيبهم وكأنه يقوم بعمل آلي بارد دون ضغينة أو كراهية، أو من وافق على ذلك بالمشاركة السلبية أو من لم يبد مقاومة أو يرفض، واعتبر البطل وجيله من الشباب أن جيل الآباء جميعهم مدانون وجعلهم ذلك يشعرون بالخزي كألمان، وقطعوا اتصالهم بجيل الآباء حتى أن البطل يصل في التنكر إلى جيل الآباء إلى الحد الأقصى، ويعتبر حب الشباب لآبائهم أمرا معيبا..
