لقد أدرك المسلمون الأوائل عظم شأن القرآن الكريم وأهميته البالغة في تنظيم حياتهم، وتقويم أخلاقهم، تهذيب سلوكهم. ومن ثمّ فقد اهتموا به اهتماماً كبيراً. وقام علماء الإسلام-عبر العصور-على إحاطته بكل أسباب الدعاية والعناية من جميع الجوانب، وكان من أبرز الأشياء من هذه الأشياء من هذه الرعاية هو القراءات المتواترة، وفن الأداء المسمى بتجويد القرآن، ومما أكد عليه رجال هذا الفن الثقات هو أن لا يؤخذ هذا الفن من مصحف، ولا كتاب دون معلم، بل يشترط لزاماً على كل متلق أن يجلس بين يدي مثقف واعٍ بمخارج الحروف وصفاتها وجميع الأحكام والسكنات والحركات.
وهذه رسالة مختصرة يضعها المؤلف بين يدي طالب العلم، وهي عبارة عن مختصرات بها شارات لجميع أركان واصول وفروع علم القراءات وفن التجويد، فهي بمثابة الزاد لمن أراد أن يراجع هذا الفن في ساعة أو ساعته من سفر وخاصة قبل التوجه إلى لجان الامتحانات في المعاهد أو في الجامعات، ولذا سماها "زاد القارئ والمقرئ في السفر".
