هل يدوم الحب رغم الصعاب؟ هل تتحول الصداقة إلى حب؟ خلعت داشا ملابسها في غرفتها النّظيفة المُرتّبة، وأخرجت المشط من شعرها، وهزّت رأسها حتى تطايرت دبابيس الشّعر فورا، وانسلّت في فراشها الأبيض، وسحبت الغطاء حتى ذقنها، وقلّصت عينيها، وقالت لنفسها: “شكرا لله، كل شيء على ما يُرام! وليس لي الآن ما يشغل بالي، فلأنم”. وتصوّرت أمامها وجها صغيرا مضحكا. فابتسمت، وعكفت ركبتيها قليلا، وطوّقت الوسادة. وغشتها سنة لذيذة مظلمة من النوم، وفي الحال تردّد في ذاكرتها صوت كاتيا بوضوح: “غير صحيح، طبعا”. فتحت داشا عينيها، “لم أقل لكاتيا كلمة واحدة. سألتها فقط: صحيح أم غير صحيح. فأجابتني وكأنّما كانت تفهم تماما مدار الحديث”. وكان الوعي يوخز جسمها كلّه وخز الإبر: “خدعتني كاتيا!”، وبعد أن تذكّرت كلّ دقائق الحديث، وكلمات كاتيا وحركاتها رأت بوضوح أنّ في الأمر خدعة حقا. وأحسّت داشا بصدمة.
