آمن بالدعوة الإسلامية نفر قليل، وفي طليعتهم ثلاثة داخل بيت النبي محمد ، هم زوجته السيدة خديجة بنت خويلد وهي أول سيدة أسلمت وابن عمه علي بن أبي طالب وهو أول صبي أسلم وكان لا يتجاوز العاشرة، وزيد بن حارثة وهو أول من أسلم من الموالي.
وكان أبو بكر الصديق أول من آمن بالدعوة الإسلامية من الرجال الأحرار، فتبعه سبعة: عثمان بن عفان، طلحة بن عبيد الله، سعد بن أبي وقاص، الزبير بن عوام، عبد الرحمن بن عوف، أبو عبيدة بن الجراح، سعيد بن زيد(). وهؤلاء الثمانية مع علي بن أبي طالب وعمر بن الخطاب الذي أسلم متأخراً عام 616م، يمثلون العشرة المبشرون بالجنة.
