في هذا الكتاب تسلط الدكتورة سوزي حمود الضوء على "الدولة العباسية .. مراحل تاريخها وحضارتها" وذلك عبر ستة مراحل هي: مرحلة التأسيس (750-775م)، مرحلة القوة والإزدهار (775-847م)، مرحلة النفوذ التركي (846-945م)، مرحلة النفوذ البويهي الفارسي (945-1055م)، مرحلة النفوذ السلجوقي التركي (1055-1194م)، ومرحلة الشيخوخة والسقوط على يد المغول (1194-1258م).
وفي هذا السياق يحضر في الكتاب جميع الخلفاء العباسيين (السبعة والثلاثين) في عناوين رئيسية لسبعة فصول، تحمل أسماء ثمانية خلفاء، هم: أبو العباس السفاح، أبو جعفر المنصور، محمد المهدي، هارون الرشيد، الأمين والمأمون، والمعتصم بالله. كما يحضر في الكتاب أسباب النمو والإزدهار والإنحطاط لتاريخ الدولة العباسية، وهو تاريخ طويل امتد طيلة 509 عاماً ميلادياً، في أكثر من خمسة قرون متتالية، تعاقب عليها سبعة وثلاثون خليفة، أولهم أبو العباس السفاح، 750م وآخرهم المعتصم بالله الذي قضى على يد المغول عام 1258م، كما أوضحت المؤلفة أصل خلفاء بني العباس السبعة والثلاثون وأنسابهم من جهة الأب والأم، وكشفت عن أن الخيزران أم الهادي والرشيد هي أول امرأة تستبد بالحكم في الإسلام، وهارون الرشيد هو أول خليفة في الإسلام ابتدع منصب قاضي القضاة، فكان أبو يوسف أول قاضي قضاة في الإسلام، والمقتدر بالله أول خليفة طلع مرتين، والقاهر بالله أول خليفة سملت عيناه، وموسى الهادي أول خليفة مات مسموماً، والمتوكل على الله أول خليفة انتهى قتلاً بمشاركة إبنه المنتصر، والراضي بالله أول خليفة ابتدع منصب أمير الأمراء ليتولاه التركي محمد رائق. كما وضعت المؤلفة ملاحق عن شجرة نسب الخلفاء العباسيين وعن شجرة نسب العلويين، وتفصيلاً للأنساب العربية والأعجمية للخلفاء الذين شملتهم الدراسة.
