يسعى الإنسان منذ الأزل وراء معرفة الأسباب التي تكمن وراء الظواهر، والبحث عن حقائق الأشياء، والنحاة العرب في بحثهم عن العلل ليسوا بدعا في ذلك؛ فقد استجابوا لهذه الرغبة التي فطر الله الإنسان عليها، وأخذت عللهم في البدء هدفًا تعليميًّا، غايته معرفة الضوابط التي تحكم الكلام العربي، ولم ينقض عصر الخليل وتلميذه إلا وقد أصبحت هذه العلل قواعد تحكم الكلام العربي. وقد أيقن علماء العربية أن هذه اللغة لم تنشأ عبثًا، فهي لغة حكيمة، وواجبهم الكشف عن أوجه هذه الحكمة، ولم يجدوا أمامهم من الوسائل إلا إعمال عقولهم وتحكيم ذوقهم وخبرتهم بظواهرها ودقائقها، فاتخذوا ذلك طريقًا لتفسير الظواهر اللغوية. هذا الكتاب يتناول وسيلة من وسائل تفسير ظواهر اللغة، وهي المشابهة، وتقوم على الربط بين الظواهر ليفسر بعضها بعضا، والمشابهة بهذا المفهوم تعد أحد جوانب التعليل، وهي من أكثر هذه الجوانب موضوعية وقبولا؛ لأنها تعتمد على اللغة نفسها، وعلى منطقها الخاص، لا المنطق العقلي، وإلى جانب ذلك تعد المشابهة أحد أركان القياس الذي يهدف إلى تفسير ظواهر اللغة، مطردة وشاذة. والكتاب يتناول المشابهة وأثرها في عدد من المباحث النحوية، كالإعراب والبناء، وعلاقتها بفكرة العمل النحوي، وكذلك علاقتها بالتعليل والقياس؛ ليُظهر في النهاية جانبًا مهمًّا من جوانب التفكير النحوي.
