هذا الكتاب يتناول التفكير النحوي لعلم من أعلام المذهب الكوفي في النحو، وهو يحيى بن زياد الفراء (ت 207 ه) من خلال أبرز مؤلفاته، وهو كتاب ""معاني القرآن"" ؛ فقد اكتنف النحوَ الكوفيَّ الكثيرُ من الغموض، ووجهت إلى إعلامه الكثيرُ من المآخذ والاتهامات، فقيل بأنهم لا يتحرون الدقة في سماع اللغة، ولا يميزون في أخذها بين البدو الخُلَّص وغيرهم ممن اختلطوا بالأمم المجاورة، وبأنهم يأخذون الشاذ ويقيسون عليه، فلا يكادون يفرقون بين الظواهر المطردة والشاذة، بل يقيسون أحيانا دون الاعتماد على شاهد، واتُّهموا – أحيانا- بعدم الأمانة، وكانت آراؤهم توصف بالضعف في أغلب المسائل التي يتعرضون لها.
وكانت هذه الاتهامات تشمل نحاة المذهب الكوفي جميعا، والفراء أحد أعمدته، ومنها ما كان يتجه إلى الفراء مباشرة، ولا شك أنها جميعا تندرج تحت أصول النحو، وبخاصة السماع والقياس؛ لذلك يتناول هذا الكتاب أصول النحو عند الفراء بغية الكشف عن الفكر النحوي لأبرز نحاة الكوفة بعد الكسائي، والوقوف على حقيقة هذه الاتهامات لديه، ولعل ذلك يكون داعيا للبحث عن حقيقة ما وجه منها إلى المذهب الكوفي في النحو العربي. والكتاب – إضافة إلى ما سبق- يظهر أن أصول النحو في صورتها التطبيقية قديمة قدم النحو، وأن ما قام به علماء أصول النحو – بداية من ابن جني – لا يعدو وضع الإطار النظري لما مارسه النحاة القدماء.
