في هذا الكتاب دفاعٌ عن الحياة البسيطة، وفق بوح سبق إليه نيتشه بتواضع الكبار حين قال: "إن نمط الحياة البسيطة هدف بعيد للغاية بالنسبة لي، وسأنتظر حتى يأتي أناس أكثر حكمة مني ليعثروا لنا عليه"، فما الحياة البسيطة؟...
إنها حياة أعيشها بأقل ما يمكن من الأوهام، حياة أتصالح فيها مع قَدَري الخاص، ولا أقارن نفسي بأي قدّر لأي إنسان آخر، حياة أكون فيها كما أنا لا كما يريدني الآخرون أن أكون.
حياة أبسُط فيها سلطاني على نفسي، بحيث تكون إنفعالاتي ومشاعري صادقة في التعبير عن القيَم التي أعبّر عنها وأدعو إليها.
حياة أصنع فيها المتعة بأقل الأشياء، وأبدع السعادة والفرح بأبسط السُّبل، حيث تكون البهجة الحقيقية هي بهجة الشعور بالنمو والإرتقاء.
لكن العودة إلى الحياة البسيطة هي الرحلة الأصعب بعد أن ضيّعنا الطريق إليها في غمرة الأوهام الكبرى.
قد يظن البعض أن من أيسر الأمور أن نعيش حياة بسيطة! هذا غير صحيح، هذا يحتاج إلى التخلّي عن الطمع في تحصيل الأشياء غير الضرورية للعيش، ويحتاج إلى قيم رفيعة تجاه الطبيعة والبشر، وتجاه النفس.
هذا الكتاب قبل أن يكون موجّهٌ لكم، موجّهٌ لي، كتبته لنفسي أوّلاً.
إنه محاولة لتبيان دور الفلسفة في صنع الحياة، وذلك حتى تمارس دورها الذي هو الدور الأكثر حيوية: فليس دور الفلسفة أن تمنحنا القدرة على فهم النصوص وحسب، بل دورها بالأساس أن تجعلنا قادرين على فهم الحياة.
