يتعرض بطل الرواية في أول تعرفنا به إلى ثلاثة أحداث تزلزل كيان الكائن العادئ، فما بالك بمن هو مهيأ فعلا للتمرد. يتعرض البطل في يوم واحد لإغراء عاهرة البلدة، ثم يعرض عليه القيام بعملية سطو، ويأخذ أول درس عملى في حياته عن ممارسة التجارة، وتعرض عليه أول رشوة. ويجسم الروائي عوامل الضغط الخارجي على بطله ويزيد من قسوتها ليهيئه للقيام بأحداث الرواية التي ستتوالى."
