لقد استغرقتُ ثلاثين عامًا لأتمكن من تأليف هذا الكتاب، ولا يرجع هذا لعدم رغبتي في تأليفه؛ الحقيقة هي أنني كنت أرغب في ذلك دائمًا، لكنني كنت مرعوبة من مجرد تحويل رغبتي هذه إلى كلمات مكتوبة، حيث كانت الفكرة تثير رهبتي وخوفي؛ لأن الثقافة اليابانية تركز لأقصى درجة على الدقة والإعداد والعناية بالتفاصيل، وأنا لم أشعر أبدًا بأنني كنت "جيدة بما يكفي" أو "جاهزة بما يكفي" لإعداد كتاب عن التقاليد والموروثات الثقافية التي نشأتُ عليها، والفلسفات التي صاغت حياتي ومهنتي.
لذا قررت أن السبيل الوحيدة التي ستجعلني أشعر بأنني مستعدة أو مؤهلة للكتابة حول هذا الموضوع هي العودة إلى موطن أجداد أمي في اليابان، وزيارة جميع أفراد أسرتي الذين لا أراهم بما فيه الكفاية، وتذوق نكهات اليابان الفريدة، ومراقبة تقاليدها وطقوسها، والشعور بأنني جزء من إيقاعها ونبضها. وهكذا ابتعت تذكرتي قبل بضع سنوات، وجهّزت حقيبتي، واتجهت شرقًا.
لقد قمت باستكشاف اليابان عدة مرات مذ كنت في الخامسة من عمري، لكنني علمتُ لحظة وصولي أن هذه الرحلة ستكون مختلفة. فمنذ اللحظة التي وطئت فيها عجلات الطائرة الأرض، شعرت بأنني في موطني. وعاهدت نفسي على أن أكون شجاعة، وأن أكون منفتحة إزاء هذه الفرصة، وأن أتعلم كل ما يمكن تعلمه. وإحقاقًا للحق، لقد كنت خارجة لتوي من علاقة فاشلة. كان قلبي يؤلمني بشدة، وعقلي مشوشًا، وجسدي منهكًا، فشعرت بأنني محطمة، وكنت آمل أن تساعدني هذه الرحلة على التعافي.
