اتصف الشيخ أحمد زَرُّوق بأنه أحد المصلحين في القرن التاسع، وظهر إصلاحه في المغرب الإسلامي في عصرٍ بدأ الإنقسام والتأخر يظهران فيه، ورأى الشيخ ما عليه الكثيرون من الجهل وتفشي البدع، خصوصاً الصّوفية الذين ابتعَدوا عن طريق الحقّ والتعبُّد الصحيح، فألّف الشيخ زرُّوق قواعده التي فصّل فيها البدع التي يفعلها فقراء الصوفية.
وأخذته الغيرة الدينية والرغبة في الإصلاح فشرح الحديث الشهير: "الدِّين النصيحة"، في كتابه هذا، ولم يقتصر فيه على جانب، بل عمّ عموماً جامعاً، نصح في كل ناحية منه، ومزج بنصائحه التصوف، وضمّنه فوائدَ جمة لا تجد مثلها في غيره، وتفنّن فيه بصورة لو اتُّبِعتْ في شرح الأحاديث لأفادت أيما إفادة، ويُعدّ زَرُّوق بتوفيقه بين طريقي الصوفية والفقهاء غزاليّ عصره الذي احتاج إلى إحياء علوم الدّين أكثر من عصر الغزالي.
وقد وُفّقَ العالم الناصح الشيخ قيس آل الشيخ مبارك فأحيا هذا الكتاب بإخراجه مُحققاً مخرَّجاً، مع شرح وجيز نفيس، بيّن فيه أدلة المؤلف، فمُطالعه - بما أضاف إليه محقّقُه - ترتاح نفسه غاية الإرتياح لنصائح زرّوق، لأنها مدلّلة بأحاديث مخرّجة، وإشاراتٍ موضِّحة، وشرح دقيق موجز.
