من المتعارف عليه بأن يتم عودة الحياة الى جسد مصاصي الدماء من خلال قطرات من الدم مباشره من منتصف كف يد بشرية الى فم جسد الهيكل العظمي لمصاص الدماء، ومن بعدها يستيقظ متعطشاً بشكل جنوني ومتجرد من معنى الإنسانية التي كان عليها فيما سبق، مجرد وحش لا يعرف معنى الحب ونبضات القلب، مفتقر الى الروح فهو مجرد جسداً مساق مطعشاً للدماء.
ولكن في هذه الرواية، قد تغيرت استراتيجية استيقاظ مصاص الدماء، وذلك بفعل طفله حيث جرح اصبعها البنصر المتصل بقلبها حينما سقط على جثة مصاص الدماء، وليجرح اصبعها عن طريق عظام قفصه الصدري، فتتقاطر الدماء من شريان اصبعها البنصر الى قلبه مباشرة، وهنا تبدأ القصة.
تمضي الأعوام وتصبح الطفلة شابة، وخلال هذه الفترة كان مارك (مصاص الدماء) قد تغير حيث أصبح قلبه اسير ساره (الطفلة) بالإضافة الى رفض جسده الى الدماء، لأنه فقط يتوق لدماء سارة، فيبحث عنها خلال عمله في المشفى بمساعده صديقة البشري الطبيب فيليب الذي ساعده على التعايش في عالم البشر.
ولكن بعد لقاء مارك بسارة وهو الذي لم يدرك بانها تلك الطفلة، انما كان في دوامه من الشك، في تلك اللحظات، كانت سارة تعاني من نوبات تفصل بين حياتها ك بشرية وبين الوحش في داخلها ومن جانب اخر جرائم القتل التي لم يجد لها مارك وفيليب اجوبه لها.
