ولمَّا كان التَصوُّف – في نظري – أروع صفحة تتجلَّى فيها روحانية الإسلام، وتفسيرًا عميقًا لهذا الدين، فيه إشباع للعاطفة وتغذية للقلب، في مقابلة التفسير العقلي الجاف الذي وضعه المتكلمون والفلاسفة، والتّفسير الصُّوري القاصر الذي وضعه الفقهاء، كتبتُ هذه الصَّفحات؛ لأبرز فيها بعض معالم الصورة التي يتلخص فيها موقف الصوفية من الدين والله والعالم، ذلك الموقف الذي رضيه الصُّوفية، واطمأنُّوا إليه، وطالبوا به أنفسهم، ولم يطالبوا به غيرهم. وسمِّيتُ هذا الموقف «الثورة الروحية في الإسلام »؛ لأن التصوف كان انقلاب الأوضاع والمفاهيم الإسلامية كما حدّدها الفقهاء والمتكلِّمون والفلاسفة. وهو الذي بثَّ في تعاليم الإسلام روحًا جديدةً، أدرك مغزاها من أدركه، وأساء فهمها من أساءه. هذه محاولة لفهم التَّصوُّف وحياة الصُّوفية في الإسلام، كما استطعت أن استطعتُ أن أستجذبها من أقوالهم، وعرضٌ عامٌّ للصُّورة التي يظهر فيها اختلافهم عن غيرهم من طوائف طالبي الحقيقة – كما يُسميهم الغزالي – في فهمهم لهذه الحقيقة ومنهجهم في الوصول إليها. وقد يذهب بعض الباحثين إلى غير ما ذهبتُ إليه من تأويل لبعض أقول الصُّوفية، أو تخريج لها، أو تعليق عليها، أو في استخلاص هذه النَّظرية أو تلك منها، وقد ذكرتُ أنَّ باب الاجتهاد في هذا النحو من البحث لا يزال مفتوحًا.
