كان اليوم الذي توقفت فيه عن تعاطي الكحول هو اليوم الذي اقتحم فيه عملاء وكالة الخدمة السرية غرفة المعيشة في بيتي.
قد تكون كلمة "اقتحم" مبالغًا فيها، فهم يستأذنون أولًا قبل الدخول. كانوا مهذبين، كانوا ثلاثة عملاء: عميلين كبيرين في السن وعميلًا شابًّا في العشرينات من عمره. ربما كان يجب عليَّ ألا أسمح بدخولهم، لكني كنت ثملًا قليلًا بعد وجبة الغداء. وقد حدث هذا يوم الجمعة قبل عيد العمال.
في ذلك الوقت، كنت أدير موقعًا فكاهيًّا معروفًا بالمقالب التي كنا نحصل من خلالها على الدعاية والترويج. ومن المزحات المفضلة لديَّ كانت مزحة الحصول على بطاقة ائتمان باسم أحد المشاهير. كان من السهل القيام بذلك: تتصل بشركة الائتمان الخاصة بك، وتخبرهم بأنك تريد إضافة "حامل بطاقة إضافي"، وتعطيهم اسم أحد المشاهير، "باراك أوباما" مثلًا.
في الوقت الذي حصلت فيه على بطاقة الائتمان المزيفة باسم "باراك أوباما"، لم يكن قد رُشح رسميًّا للانتخابات الرئاسية في عام ٢٠٠٨، لكنني كنت أرى أنه من المحتمل أن ينتهي به المطاف في البيت الأبيض. لذا دوَّنت قصة مزحة بطاقة الائتمان، التي زادت من عدد الزيارات إلى موقعي بدرجة غير مسبوقة. كنت أخاطر بدرجة أكبر فأكبر في مزحاتي، محاولًا التفوق على نفسي، ولكني اعتقدت أن مزحة الرئيس كانت إلى حد كبير أخطرها جميعًا.
