لا أبتسم عادة, بسبب جرح قديم في شفتي العلوية يمنعها من الانبساط طبيعة. توقف القطار من نصف ساعة في منتصف الطريق. وحديث الركاب انسبك بملل متعرق. والجو حار يتنبه بصفعات ريق مر. يقال أن سائق القطار يزور خالته في البيت القريب الذي أراه من النافذة على يساري. سخر الواقفون, وضحكت السيدة الجالسة أمامي عندما رأيناه يغادر قطاره الرابض متعثرا, يحمل تحت إبطه أوزة وفي يده حقيبة ثقيلة أعيت مروره عبر الأرض الزراعية. وإلى يميني رجل يداه أقذر من قعر حذائه, ولمّا طال الانتظار وتذكر أخرج من جيبه ورقة لُفت بها قطعة (هريسة) وأخذ يحاتت أطرافها حتى انتهت, وطفق يلحس أصابعه حتى أعادها نظيفة من العسل والأوساخ.
