"على مدى عقود طويلة ظلّ المسرح السعودي مغيباً عن المجتمع السعودي؛ نتيجة بعض الظروف الثقافية والاجتماعية التي ضيقت من حدوده، بجانب تهميشه من قبل الدرس الأدبي والأكاديمي على الرغم من كونه جزءاً لا يتجزأ من فنون الأدب العربي الحديث.
وانطلاقا من دورها الثقافي وإيمانها بأن المسرح من أهم أسباب التنوير الفكري والاجتماعي، وأداة لتفعيل إدراك المجتمع للواقع المعاش؛ اختارت الباحثة السعودية حليمة مظفر استعراض نظرية الدراما قديما وحديثا، لتكون منطلقا في دراسة المسرح المحلي، وقد أبرزت كثيراً من قضاياه وهمومه في كتابها «المسرح السعودي.. بين البناء والتوجس» الذي صدر في طبعته الثانية عام 2013م، كاشفة من خلاله واقع المسرح كفن تمت ممارسته بتواضع على مسارح بعض المؤسسات الثقافية والتعليمية بالسعودية، كما سجلت أثر الثقافة الاجتماعية فيه، وأهم الأسباب التي تعتقد أنها أدت إلى تجاهل درسه والاهتمام فيه وعدم تحوله إلى فعل مسرحي اجتماعي منظم، كالنظرة المتشائمة والمتوجسة والضيقة اجتماعيا ودينيا للفن المسرحي، بجانب عدم قناعة جمهرة من المثقفين بالكتابة للمسرح، وغير ذلك من أسباب؛ مختتمة الكتاب بعدد من الاستنتاجات النقدية والمقترحات التي من شأنها النهوض بالمسرح وتطويره في المجتمع السعودي.
