لكن فى حين تناولت "ذهول ورعدة" الحياة العلمية لبطلة تشبه رحلتها العملية كثيراً رحلة المؤلفة فى اليابان، فقد تناولت "لا حواء ولا أدم" الحياة العاطفية لهذه البطلة من خلال قصة حب تربطها بطالب يابانى شاب من أسرة عريقة، ةتمثل العلاقة فى بعد من ابعادها المتعددة علاقة علاقة الشرق بالغرب، ومحاولة الطرفين المحبين تذويب الاختلافات الثقافية والاجتماعية والعاطفية، وشح العادات والتقاليد المختلفة بيفهم الحبيبان مرجعية أحدهما الآخر ويقتربان أكثر.
كتب الناقد الشهير "لو بوان" عن "أميلى نوتومب": (أميلى نوتومب تخوض عملية بحث عن صوت فولتيرى خاص بها.. صوت خفيف، غير قابل للتلف ومتحرك دائماً، حواراتها نقية، سريعة، حادة، صافية، غير قابلة للصدأ، مصقولة، لا يمكن التنبوء بها، وهى فوق ذلك سامقة حد البراعة، لا شئ يتسكع أو يثقل على القارئ فى هذا الكتاب، هذا الكتاب أعجوبة صغيرة، ولكن لماذا قلت "صغيرة"؟ هو أعجوبة فعلاً.
