لم أنتبه إلى بكائي إلا حينما مسح مراد دمعات تزحلقت فوق خدي بأطراف أصابعه، وليس بالمناشف كام تعود أن يفعل. كنت أبكي، وأقضم التفاح، أتحسس أصابعه. وكانت هي تجلس في الكرسي المقابل تقرأ رواية " For Bread Alone " أو "الخبز الحافي" لمحمد شكري. هادئة جدا كأنها في قطار آخر لا ترانا، وكأنها خارج المكان، وخارج الزمن، وخارج المشهد، وخارج الرواية لا تسمع أنين الخبز داخل الرواية، وخارج الرواية في الكرسيين المقابلني لها. أبيك وأقضم التفاح، أتحسس أصابعه، وكانت هي تجلس في الكرسي المقابل محايدة، تشبه ذلك السارق اللطيف الذي يفرغ محتويات حقيبتك، ويتكرم بإرسال بطاقتك الوطنية، ووثائقك إلى عنوانك البريدي. كانت تتكرم عىل قلبي الذي سقط بمساحة حرة كي يتدحرج جيدا. أبيك، وأقضم التفاح، وأتحسس أصابعه، أراقب قلبي وهو يتدحرج، يتضاءل ليصير تفاحة فاسدة.
