بهذه الخطوات , صار علم البيولوجيا العصبية , من خلال دراسته لمراكز المخ ودوائره الكهربائية العصبية وناقلاته الكيميائية , هو الحكم الذي يعول على كلمته عند الحديث عن معضلة العقل .
وتتأرجح النظرة إلى العلاقة بين المخ والعقل بين طرفي نقيض , نظرة مغرقة في ماديتها , ترى أن المخ يفرز العقل كما تفرز الكلى البول , ونظرة أخرى تدخل بالعقل إلى فضاء الميتافيزيقا , وتعتبره نشاطا غيبيا لا دور للمخ فيه . ويقوم هذا الكتاب بالبحث عن موضوع الحقيقة بين هذين الطرفين .
ولمعالجة هذا الموضوع , يبدأ الكتاب بعرض بنية المخ وآليات قيامه بوظائفه , ثم يدلف إلى دراسة ما يميز الإنسان عما سواه من الكائنات من ملكات عقلية , والطريقة التي يمارس بها المخ هذه الملكات وكيفية نشأتها في الإنسان . ولا تكتمل النظرة إلى العقل الإنساني دون تحرير لدوره في المشاعر الروحية والدينية , هذا الدور الذي أدى حديثا إلى نشأة علم البيولوجيا العصبية للتدين Neuro - theology .
