"احتلت الرواية العربية الحديثة مساحة شاسعة بين الفنون الأدبية الحديثة، حين تجاوبت بشكل أساس وفاعل مع التطور الثقافي والحضاري، وواكبت الحداثة، وأسست لنفسها منظومة فكرية، جمعت من خلالها بين مختلف العلوم الإنسانية. فالأدب في معناه العميق، يحمل دلالات نفسية واجتماعية ويصبها في قوالب إيحائية، فهو بحد ذاته قيمة كبرى، تنعكس في مرآته الحياة الاجتماعية والواقع الموضوعي، وتضم في ظلالها الخيوط المتشابكة في عملية تزاوج بين المنفعة وبين المتعة، وفي بؤرتها تجمع بين أشتات المباحث الإنسانية المتفرعة، وتربط بين محوري الحق والجمال.
والفن الروائي هو مرآة المجتمع، تحكمه التحوّلات والتغيّرات الطارئة على القيم، وتخضع من ناحية أخرى، للذوق العام ومتطلباته العصرية؛ إنه الفن الذي يؤثر في الذوق العام، ويَسِمه بسماته، كونه فناً رائجاً اجتماعياً تحديداً، وهنا قد تحصل عملية التأثر والتأثير. وقد انخرط في هذا الفن روائيون كثر، اتخذوا مكانة رفيعة في العالم العربـي، منذ بدايات العصر الحديث، ومرت أسماء كثيرة، وقد اشتهر عدد كبير منهم، وقد شكّل كل منهم عالماً قائماً بذاته يفتح شهية الباحثين والدارسين.
إن الكاتبة الجزائرية أحلام مستغانمي، من أبرز المؤلفين في الرواية العربية الحديثة، الذين ذاع صيتهم في الوطن العربـي، خلال السنوات العشرين المنصرمة، وقد أصدرت روايتها الأولى ""ذاكرة الجسد"" عام 1993، ونالت انتشاراً واسعاً، وجمهوراً عريضاً، وشهرة لم يحظَ بها إلا القليل من الروائيين العرب. وقد أشاد بها الشاعر نـزار قباني قائلاً: ""روايتها دوختني، وأنا نادراً ما أدوخ أمام رواية من الروايات.. ولو أن أحداً طلب مني أن أوقع اسمي تحت هذه الرواية الاستثنائية، المغتسلة بأمطار الشعر لما ترددت لحظة واحدة""."
