في سنة 1951م انتفض علماء الأزهر الشريف وطلابه في مظاهرات ومؤتمرات واعتصامات تطالب بإصلاح الأزهر وتطوير مناهجه، وإنصاف العاملين فيه.
وكنت– يومئذ– طالبًا بمعهد طنطا الأحمدي الثانوي.. وكوّنا اتحادً للطلاب– كنت خطيب مظاهراته ومؤتمراته– وطفنا على عدد من المعاهد، وألفنا وفدًا مشتركًا سافر إلى القاهرة للقاء الشيخ الأكبر شيخ الأزهر الشيخ عبد المجيد سليم (1299 – 1374 هـ، 1882 – 1954م) لعرض مطالبنا عليه.
وعلى باب مشيخة الأزهر، اصطدمت بنا الشرطة، تريد الحيلولة بيننا وبين لقاء الشيخ الأكبر.. وتدحرجت عمائمنا على سلم المشيخة!.
وأخيرًا، تمكنا من الدخول إلى مكتب مدير مكتب الشيخ الأكبر– الشيخ محمد محمد المدني (1325 – 1388 هـ، 1907 – 1968م) الذي هدأ من روعنا، وسكّن غضبنا، وقادنا للقاء الشيخ عبد المجيد سليم.. فقصصنا عليه مطالبنا، ورأى آثار ما صنعت الشرطة بنا؛ فكانت غضبته الشهيرة التي تمثلت في التصريح الذي أعلنه– وكان الملك فاروق (1328 – 1384 هـ، 1920 – 1965م) يلهو بملاهي (كابرى)– بإيطاليا - . وقال فيه: (تقتير هنا.. وإسراف هناك)!.
وهو التصريح الذي رفض التراجع عنه، فكان الضغط عليه ليستقيل من مشيخة الأزهر. فقبل– راضيًا– طالما أن أحدًا لن يستطيع أن يمنعه من أداء الصلاة في بيت من بيوت الله!.
