كان الشيخ الغزالي يوجز الحديث عن الإسلام عندما يقول: إنه «قلبٌ تقي، وعقلٌ ذكي»؛ مُعبّراً بذلك عن منهاج الوسطية الإسلامية.
وكان يدعو في فَهْم القرآن الكريم إلى تدبُّر محاوره الجامعة: التوحيد، وآيات الله الكونية، والقصص القرآني، ونبأ الغيب والبعث والجزاء، والتشريع.
وكان مدافعاً عن سُنّة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فهي مع القرآن: «قِوَام الإسلام، وهي الامتداد لِسَنَا القرآن، كان الشيخ الغزالي يوجز الحديث عن الإسلام عندما يقول: إنه «قلبٌ تقي، وعقلٌ ذكي»؛ مُعبّراً بذلك عن منهاج الوسطية الإسلامية.

وكان مدافعاً عن سُنّة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فهي مع القرآن: «قِوَام الإسلام، وهي الامتداد لِسَنَا القرآن، والتفسير لمعناه»، ويرى أنه لا سُنّة بغير فقه.
كانت رسالة الشيخ الغزالي، في حياته الفكرية والدعوية والتعليمية والعملية، هي: إحياء الأمّة بالإسلام...
لقد اقترح الشيخ خالد محمد خالد– رحمه الله-... وضعَ مائة سؤال كي يجيب عنها الشيخ الغزالي.. لتكون إجاباته: معالم استشراف مستقبل الإسلام في واقعنا الحضاري المعاصر... ولقد وَضعتُ الأسئلةَ المائة، وقام الأستاذ خالد باستبدال بعضها، وأرسلها إلى الشيخ الغزالي الذي قال عنها: إنها «... تُغني الثقافة الإسلامية، وتجلو غباراً كثيراً عن حقائق الرّسَالة الخالدة».
إنّ إجابات الشيخ الغزالي عن هذه الأسئلة المائة، عن الإسلام (ماضيه وحاضره ومستقبله)، وعن أمّة الإسلام- في واقعها المعاصر- إنما تمثّل: «معالم المشروع الحضاري» لهذا العالم الجليل، الذي مثَّل واحداً من أبرز مجدّدي الإسلام في القرن العشرين.
ولقد نثرنا الفكر الذي أبدعه الشيخ في هذه الإجابات، وألّفنَا بين معالمه، وقمنا بتصنيف مفرداته، فجاء في هذه «المعالم» لهذا «المشروع الحضاري».
