تناقش الرواية مشكلات المهمشين والعشوائيات، وتنقل لنا صورة حية من وسط ذلك الركام من الصفائح والطوب والأزقة والحارات والبشر، حيث لا مستقبل هناك، حين يصير التسول حرفة، والاحتيال مصدرا للرزق.وتنقل لنا عدة صور للحياة داخل تلك العشوائيات، حيث تدور أحداث الرواية في منطقة "تل العقارب" بالسيدة زينب، حول أسرة "عبدالشكور" ذلك العجوز المنهك الذي يملأ سعاله البيت، وأولاده أبوعوف الذي يعمل في موقف السيارات الأجرة، وحسونة الذي يتابع صفحة الوفيات بالجرائد ليتطفل على الناس في سرادقات العزاء ويبتز أموالهم. وعزازي بائع المناديل في إشارات المرور.. وسميرة بائعة الورد، حلوة اللسان التي عشقها رفعت بطل الرواية ذلك الشاب الذي حضر من الريف ليدرس الفلسفة في جامعة القاهرة فإذا به يقع في عشق سميرة، ذلك العشق ومعه الفقر الذي يعيش فيه يدفعانه لاستغلال أبيها عبدالشكور الذي يفتح له أكثر من باب للتسول ويحاول رفعت أن يعلن تمرده على عبدالشكور، ويعلن له أنه حضر ليدرس الفلسفة لا التسول، ولكن عبدالشكور يقنعه بأن التسول عمل، وأنه يعمل مثل أولاده الذي يمثل هو واحدا منهم وينتهي الصراع باستسلام رفعت لعبدالشكور.فمرة يعمل منشدا في المواصلات العامة ومرة شحاذا وهكذا تمضي أحداث الرواية وتمر الأيام ويزداد عشق رفعت لسميرة وتبادله سميرة بعض المشاعر ولكن سطوة الفتوة سعد سلطة الذي يحكم المنطقة ويحب سميرة ويطارد رفعت ويكدر عليه عيشه لإحساسه أن سميرة تميل لهذا التلميذ، هذا الفتوة كانت سطوته أقوى فقد انتهى الأمر إلى أن فقدت سميرة شرفها عنوة على يد سعد سلطة ذلك الفتوة الذي قتل في وضح النهار وفي ظروف قاسية وبين عشية وضحاها يتحول عبدالشكور وأولاده إلى ملائكة رحمة مع الطالب رفعت إلى أن دبروا له مكيدة وجد نفسه على إثرها متزوجا لسميرة التي فقدت شرفها وبها ضاع طالب الفلسفة بين أزقة وشوارع القاهرة. فقد استيقظ ذات يوم إلى مبخرة تسلم إليه من عبدالشكور وهو يقول له: اسعى على رزقك.
