يقوم هذا البحث بتحليل مصادر الثروة العربية قبل الإسلام، ويستكشف الأرض، وكيف جرت تهيئتها لظهور هذا الدين الجديد. ويعرض العوائق الاقتصادية التي حالت دون انتشار الإسلام بسرعة، وكيف استطاع الإسلام أن يمهّد السبل لنشوء عوامل اقتصادية، ساعدت، في ما بعد، على تقويته، وانتشاره في مكة والمدينة.كذلك يعرض كيف انتقل المجتمع العربي من التجارة إلى الفتوحات الإسلامية، وكيف أسهمت هذه الفتوحات في تكبير حجم المال العربي بعد الإسلام.وفي البحث، قراءة للتاريخ الإسلامي بجرأة متناهية كتاريخ فقط، تكوّن بفعل عوامل اقتصادية واجتماعية وسياسية مختلفة، وتكوّن كذلك بفعل أشخاص وشخصيات تاريخية وواقع ملموس على الأرض، وبين البشر. وهذا المنهاج في قراءة التاريخ الإسلامي المبكر – على وجه الخصوص – لاقى صعوبات جمّة سبق أن واجهها كل من تعرّض لهذه الفترة الدقيقة من تاريخ الإسلام. فالمصادر التاريخية قليلة، إذا لم تكن نادرة. وما توافر منها – على ندرته – وُظّف لمصلحة الدين الجديد كلية، وتلك سُنّة تاريخية معروفة من قبلُ ومن بعد. فالجديد يَجُبُّ دائماً ما قبله. وبرغم ذلك، استطاع هذا الكتاب أن يكشف عن حقائق تاريخية، لم نكن نظن في السابق أنها كانت قائمة، وذات دور كبير في ظهور الإسلام.
