منذ ورقة الإهداء الأولى "إلى الذين ما زالوا يحلمون بوطن...!" تسوح "فريدة إبراهيم" بأحلامها باحثة عن المدن، ذلك أن المدن تحمل صفات النساء وتقبل كل تأثيرات الحب والكره والإهمال والهجران والمغازلة، فهناك مدن نحبها من اول نظرة وأخرى نقرر مقاطعتها، وثالثة نحب أن نحلم بها كــ(مثال) لا وجود لها إلا في أحلامنا.
إذن "ثمة حلم ظل يراودنا...!" وأحياناً قد يصير الحقيقة التي تكتب قصة كل القصة، هكذا تكتب فريدة إبراهيم عن المدن العالقة في الذاكرة "لتعلن للجميع أن بين الحضور والغياب دائماً هناك قصة... ما".
و"أحلام مدينة" ليست رواية تقليدية، بل هي رحلة الكاتبة في الزمان والمكان وبين هذه المدينة وتلك فهي تراها من خلال قصص الحب وأشعارها، وبين صانعي التاريخ وأمجادهم.
فالسفر بين المدن كالضياء هو فعل محبة يشرق داخل النفس لينير الزوايا المعتمة، وبذا تتلاقى وتتلاقح في لحظة ما في مكان ما، حاولت الكاتبة من خلالها جمع ولململة أجمل لحظات العمر، ولحظات التاريخ، وسكبتها شذرات من سيرة ذاتية بعثرها الزمان.
يقول الكاتبة في ثنايا عملها "... عندما نكون غرباء وتكون كل الأشياء التي تحيط بنا غريبة ومثيرة للغثيان، يكون هناك ألف سبب لكي نبكي بصوت مسموع... ثم نحلم!.
في النهاية لا نملك إلا الحلم! الحلم في حضرة تحقيق كل الأمنيات، ولو لبعض الوقت، فقد ولى زمن البطر، لأن الغربة تُعلّمنا القناعة فنكتفي بفتات الأشياء وفتات الأحلام والأمنيات..."، وبالتأكيد الكاتبة تعني الإنسان العربي ولا أحداً غيره من هذا العالم الواسع...
