ترفض بعض المدارس التاريخيَّة التفسيرات البطوليَّة للتاريخ، والتي عادةً ما تتخذ من مفهوم البطولة محرِّكًا له، إلا إن قبول مثل هذه التفسيرات عند المدارس الأخرى له ما يبرِّره، فلا يمكننا أن نستبعد الخصائص الذاتيَّة الفريدة للشخصيَّة التاريخيَّة، والتي تسهم بقسطٍ كبير في سَيْر حركة التاريخ على نحو ما أرادت لها الذات الإنسانيَّة، كما لا يمكننا التعويل فقط على الظروف الاجتماعيَّة والسياسيَّة والاقتصاديَّة والعسكريَّة باعتبارها هي فقط ما يصنع التاريخ، وكأنَّ مفهوم الإرادة الإنسانيَّة غير موجود أو عاجز عن التحكُّم ولو بقَدْرٍ ما في مسار التاريخ. وفي هذا الكتاب يستعرض «إبراهيم رمزي» إحدى تلك الشخصيات العظيمة التي أثَّرت برأيه في تاريخ الغرب والشرق، وهي شخصية «نابليون بونابرت»؛ الإمبراطور الفرنسيُّ الشهير الذي تولى زمام الحكم في فرنسا، وكان له الأثر البالغ في التاريخ الحديث.
