لما توفي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وارتجت العرب واختلف المسلمون ولا سيما الأنصار والمهاجرون في الخلافة فتدارك الأمر "أبو بكر" رضي الله عنه بحكمته وسرعته وسرعة بديهته وتمت البيعة له بالإجماع. وقد برهن رضي الله عنه أنه أكفأ رجل وأنه رجل الساعة وقتئذ لأن العرب عندما سمعوا بوفاة رسول الله ارتد كثير منهم؛ ولكن هذا الأمر لم يرهب الخليفة، وإنما حثه على إرسال الجيوش واختيار القواد والولاة إلى جميع أنحاء العرب؛ فكبح جماح المرتدين وهزمهم شرّ هزيمة.
ولا يقتصر على ذلك بل بعث الجيوش إلى العراق والشام، فانهزمت الفرس والروم ومن ولاهما من العرب وتعدى المسلمون في فتوحهم شبه جزيرة العرب. وقد تمّ ذلك كله في مدة خلافته وهي سنتان وأشهر، ولا شك أن هذه مدة قصيرة بالنسبة إلى ما تمّ في خلالها من جلائل الأعمال، وقد مهد بذلك طريق الفتوحات الإسلامية لمن جاء بعده من الخلفاء واتضحت بذلك حكمة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في اختيار أبي بكر بعده.
هذا هو أبو بكر الصديق خليفة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الذي عنى "محمد رضا" بترجمة حياته وشرح خلافته ومآثره، وأعماله التي استطاع من خلالها توطيد دعائم الدين الإسلامي. وقد ألحق المؤلف سيرة أبو بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه بسيرة صحابي جليل وبطل مشهور وفارس مأثور "خالد بن الوليد" (سيف الله)، صاحب الفتوحات العظيمة والغزوات الكثيرة، وأشهر الفاتحين في الإسلام.
