هذا كتاب يتناول شريحة من التاريخ كنت شاهدا عليها خلال سني خدمتي في البيت الأبيض، كما يتناول أشخاصا حسني النوايا، ولكن لهم أخطاؤهم – بمن فيهم أنا – قاموا بصنع ذلك التاريخ. كتبت هذا ليس من منطلق تصفية حسابات ضد أحد، أو بغية تضخيم للدور الذي قمت به، بل بكل بساطة، كي أدون ما أعرفه وما تعلمته أملا في أن يكون سجلي عاملا في تعميق فهمنا للتاريخ المعاصر، وعلى الأخص فيما يتعلق بالأحداث التي تلت الهجمات المأساوية في الحادي عشر من شهر أيلول، سبتمبر، سنة 2001. بدأت عملية تدوين هذا الكتاب بوضع نفسي تحت المجهر، لم تستطع الجهود التي بذلتها في خدمة إدارة الرئيس بوش أن ترقى بي إلى ما كنت أصبوا إليه بصفتي موظفا حكوميا. لم أفهم جيدا المنحى الذي قدت نفسي إليه عبر قبولي منصل السكرتير الصحفي للبيت الأبيض في سن الخامسة والثلاثين، ولم يكن لي من الخبرة حينها سوى النذر اليسير، الآن، أفهم ذلك بشكل أفضل بكثير. هذا الكتاب هو توثيق للعملية المؤلمة في كثير من مراحلها، والتي أدت إلى وصولها إلى هذا الفهم. كنت غالبا ما أتعثر في طريقي، وأعجز عن القيام بواجبي تجاه نفسي، وتجاه الرئيس الذي كنت أعمل لديه، وكذلك تجاه الشعب الأمريكي. حاولت ممارسة لعبة واشنطن استنادا إلى القوانين المرعية، ولم أكن أجيد ممارسة هذه اللعبة في بعض الأحيان. لم يكن باستطاعتي أن أكون صادقا مع الآخرين لأنني لم أكن صادقا مع نفسي. الأخطاء التي وقعت كانت أخطائي أنا، وكان لا بد لي من تحمل العواقب. لكن قصتي الشخصية ليست لها سوى أهمية ضئيلة ضمن الصورة التاريخية العريضة. فالقصة الأهم هي تلك القصة الأكبر التي لم يكن لي فيها سوى دور صغير – إنها القصة التي تدور حول كيف انحرفت رئاسة جورج دبليو بوش بشكل رهيب عن مسارها. أمضيت بصفتي السكرتير الصحفي ساعات لا حصر لها أدافع عن هذه الإدارة من منصة غرفة اللقاءات الصحيفة في البيت الأبيض. وبالرغم من أن ما قلته آنذاك كان مبعثه إحساسي بصدق ما أقول، فقد تبين لي لاحقا أن بعض ما صرحت به كان تشويها مريعا للحقيقة. حاولت على امتداد هذه الصفحات أن أمسك بتلابيب بعض من هذه الحقائق التي أرادت القوى الفاعلة داخل البيت الأبيض طمسها أو تغييبها.
