لب المشكلة هو أن الثقافة الغربية منحازة بشكل جذري ومتأصل ضد الإسلام والمسلمين، وأن النساء المسلمات في الغرب اللاتي اخترن ارتداء ما يؤمن بأنه اللباس المفروض دينيا، أصبح حجابهن أبرز الرموز الإسلامية الظاهرة في الشارع الغربي، ومن ثم أصبحن هدفا رئيسا للمشاعر السلبية المعادية للإسلام. وقد تغلغل الخطاب النسوي العلماني السلبي عن النساء المسلمات في مصادر الثقافة الغربية الرئيسة إلى حد اعتبار مقولة ((الحجاب يقهر النساء المسلمات)) مسلمة حتى من قبل من لم يلتقوا امرأة مسلمة واحدة في حياتهم. وفي الحقيقة ليس هناك فرق بين النظرة ((النخبوية)) لأولئك المثقفين الذين من المفترض أن يكون لديهم وعي أكبر، ونظرة غير المثقفين)) ممن هم أقل وعيا واطلاعا، إذ يمكن أن نجد النظرة السلبية للحجاب لدى كافة مستويات المجتمع الغربي. بل يمكن القول : إن النظرة الجماهيرية غير الواعية التي تعادي الحجاب؛ يعود سبب رواجها إلى أفكار ينشرها معلقون مفكرون من خلال كتاباتهم الصحفية في مختلف أنواع الثقافة الشعبية. كما يلاحظ أن أي دراسة موضوعية أو إيجابية، سواء أكانت أكاديمية أم صحفية، تعجز عن اختراق هذه الصورة السلبية. وهكذا فالوضع لا يختلف عما كان عليه بالأمس، والأصوات الغائبة في هذا الجدل هي أصوات النساء أنفسهن ممن اخترن ارتداء الحجاب.
