إن هذه الدراسة المفصلة والمهمة تحليل نقدي قوي للمفهوم الغربي الشائع الذي يرى الحجاب رمزاً لإضطهاد المرأة المسلمة وتقييداً لحريتها.
وفي بناء فكري يتسم بالعمق والتعقيد تسعى الباحثة إلى بناء نظرية إيجابية عن الحجاب، تتحدى رؤية الثقافة الشائعة للنساء المسلمات بوصفهن رهن الخضوع التام من جانبهن والتسلط المطلق من جانب الرجال، كما تتحدى الأطروحات الأشد تعقيداً التي تقدمها شخصيات ليبرالية في الحركة النسويّة مثل فاطمة المرنيسي وأرلين ماكلويد، وغيرهما ممن سعين إلى إنتقاد إختيار النساء إرتداء الحجاب بوصفه تراجعاً عن حركة التحرر.
تفحص المؤلفة بعض إفتراضات هؤلاء الكتاب والتحقق من مدى صدقها ودقتها؛ ثم تطرح فكرتها بأن الحكم على الحجاب بوصفه أحد مظاهر القهر في الإسلام إنما هو قائم على منطور ليبرالي لفكرتي "الحرية" و"المساواة"، وهذا الفهم الليبرالي من شأنه أن يحجب أساليب أخرى لفهم هاتين الفكرتين وقد يتيح مدخلاً أكثر إيجابية للتفكر في مسألة إرتداء الحجاب.
وترى المؤلفة أن إرتداء الحجاب قد يكون باباً للتحرر من طغيان أسطورة الجمال وصورة المرأة المثالية الرشيقة.
يمتطي كتاب "نظرة الغرب إلى الحجاب" صهوة علوم نظرية كبيرة؛ النظرية السياسية والنسوية وعلم الإنسان وعلم الإجتماع والتاريخ ودراسات الشرق الأوسط ودراسات الإسلام، وفي بحث واسع المدى تبدأ المؤلفة من الخلفية التاريخية وراء التنميط الغربي للحجاب وأثر العصر الإستعماري، حتى إتجاهات التحجب الحديثة في الدول الإسلامية وغير الإسلامية.
ويضم تحليلها مقابلات شخصية مع مجموعة من المسلمات من خلفيات مختلفة في تورنتوبكندا، وإذ تكشف المؤلفة زيف أساطير شائعة وراسخة عن النساء المسلمات وعن الحجاب، تستدعي الإحترام المستحق لأصوات النساء المسلمات المؤمنات، وتقول: إن التحرر والمساواة للمرأة من أصل الإسلام نفسه.
